Specialist Scoliosis Physiotherapy

Scoliosis Physiotherapy at The Heal Hut

Specialist rehabilitation for spinal curve management and post-operative recovery

🎯 Specialist Physiotherapy for Spinal Curvature

Scoliosis is a complex three-dimensional spinal condition involving curvature and rotation of the vertebrae. It can affect adolescents during periods of rapid growth (idiopathic scoliosis), or present in adults due to age-related degeneration. While surgical intervention is sometimes necessary, many individuals benefit from structured physiotherapy β€” whether managing a curve conservatively or recovering from spinal fusion surgery.

At The Heal Hut, our scoliosis service is led by spinal specialist physiotherapists with extensive experience in treating scoliosis patients daily in their roles held in the central London Bolsover clinic for the royal national orthopaedic hospital. We support patients after hospital discharge and those managing their scoliosis conservatively, delivering personalised, clinically grounded care through virtual 1:1 virtual sessions.

πŸ‘₯ Who We Work With

We provide expert rehabilitation for:

  • Adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis where the Cobb angle is below surgical thresholds to help reduce progression rate of their curve and improve postural awareness and confidence.
  • Adults with degenerative scoliosis, longstanding scoliosis which was not previously treated, postural imbalance, or scoliosis related pain.
  • Patients recovering from scoliosis surgery, once cleared for outpatient rehab.
  • Individuals requiring structured postural training and movement guidance to support function, mobility, and spinal health.

🧠 Conservative (Non-Surgical) Management

For those whose choose not to have surgery as a personal choice or their Cobb angle does not meet the criteria for surgery, physiotherapy offers valuable support in:

  • Promoting postural symmetry and core stability with exercise and side Shift techniques.
  • Managing pain, fatigue and spinal stiffness.
  • Helping to try to reducing curve progression rate through curve-specific exercises.
  • Supporting brace use and transition through growth if required.
  • Empowering patients with education and self-management tools.

Our treatment approach integrates recognised scoliosis-specific methods and follows best practice guidance from international experts (e.g. SOSORT).

πŸ₯ Post-Operative Scoliosis Rehabilitation

For patients cleared for outpatient rehab (typically 6–8 weeks post-op)

We support patients following surgical discharge β€” including those recovering from posterior spinal fusion, growth rod insertion, or corrective procedures. Once safe to mobilise independently, we provide:

  • Postural re-education and spinal alignment retraining
  • Core strengthening and flexibility work adapted to healing stage
  • Movement strategy coaching for walking, stairs, dressing, and light tasks
  • Brace weaning support, if prescribed
  • Advice on gradual return to education, work, and low-impact activity

We do not provide early-stage inpatient care (e.g. log-rolling, catheter care). Instead, our role begins once you’re mobile, home, and ready to begin rehabilitation safely.

βš–οΈ Functional Goals

Our aim is to help you:

  • Regain postural confidence and movement efficiency
  • Build spinal and limb strength safely
  • Manage any brace-related discomfort or weaning
  • Transition smoothly back to school, work, or activity
  • Reduce compensatory habits that may lead to secondary pain

πŸ“† Timeline Guidance

Activity

Approximate Timeline (consultant-dependent)

Light walking and mobility

6 weeks post-op

Sitting for longer periods (school/work)

6–8 weeks

Weaning from spinal brace

Return to swimming, cycling

~3 months

Return to sport involving impact

~12 months (consultant clearance must be granted)

We help you meet these goals gradually and safely, adjusting your programme as you progress and can be in contact with your consultant if required.
